Suggestions from readers

How a child proposes a fix to a book, and how you approve it.

A Reader cannot edit a book directly — but a child reading a page is often the first person to notice that its text is wrong. Suggest edit lets them propose the fix.

Making one

Suggestions are made in the Book Editor: Suggest this page's text for the words on a page, Suggest book details for the title, author or summary. Both ask for the proposed wording and, optionally, a reason. On book details, anything left blank keeps its current value.

Those two buttons appear only for a Reader. An adult does not see them, because a Family Manager or Parent can simply make the change — there is nobody for them to ask.

Approving one

You get there from the notification. When a child suggests something, Zen Reader notifies the adults in the family; tapping that notification opens the Suggested edits page. There is no menu item for it — it was removed because, in a family with no child account, it was a permanent link to a permanently empty page.

So make sure you will see the notification: Settings → Notifications → Edit suggestions. It also appears in the app's own notification list, which does have a menu item, so nothing is lost if you miss the alert itself.

On that page, Family Managers and Parents see two lists — Page text and Book details — each with Approve and Reject. Approving applies the change to the book, and either way the child is told the outcome.

Following your own

The same screen has My suggestions, and everybody has it, including the parent who does the approving — reached the same way, from the notification telling you the outcome. Each one shows where it got to: Waiting for review, Approved, Declined, Withdrawn, or Superseded where the text moved on underneath it. A Reader can Withdraw one that is still waiting.

Asking to skip a word is somewhere else

A child tapping Ask to skip this word on a spelling or word-list word is not making a suggestion, and it will not appear here. Those are approved in place, on the Spelling and Word lists screens, under Skip requests. See Spelling practice and Word lists.
